What Is Data Annotation? A Practical Guide for Beginners

Updated · Independent guide by AI Gig Scout

Data annotation (also called data labelling) is the process of adding labels to raw data — images, text, audio or video — so a machine learning model can learn what that data means (IBM, Wikipedia). Most practical AI systems learn from these human-provided labels, and the model can only be as accurate as the labels it was trained on (AWS).

Examples of data annotation

Text

Tagging a product review as positive or negative, or marking names and places in a sentence.

Images

Drawing boxes around every car in a street photo, or outlining the exact pixels of an object (AWS).

Audio and video

Transcribing speech, or tracking a moving object frame by frame — common for robotics and driving datasets (Wikipedia).

AI responses

Reading two chatbot answers and choosing the better one, or rating an answer for accuracy and tone. These human judgements feed techniques like RLHF (AWS).

How annotation trains and evaluates AI

A labelled dataset acts as the "ground truth": the model learns patterns from it during training, and a held-back portion is used to test how well it performs (AWS). Mistakes or inconsistency in labels carry straight through into the model's behaviour, which is why platforms care so much about guidelines and quality checks.

Common tasks, skills and qualifications

  • Careful reading and following detailed written guidelines.
  • Consistency and attention to detail over long sessions.
  • Strong writing in the project language — many roles want native fluency.
  • For expert projects: a degree or professional experience in the field.
  • For coding projects: working knowledge of the relevant languages.

Data annotation vs AI evaluation vs AI training

TermWhat it usually means in job listings
Data annotationAdding labels to raw data (text, images, audio, video).
AI evaluationJudging and rating outputs a model has already produced.
AI trainingAn umbrella term for human work that improves models — including annotation, evaluation, writing ideal answers and expert review.

Typical work arrangements and finding opportunities

Most roles are remote and contract-based, paid hourly or per task, with work available as projects run. People usually find them by applying directly to platforms. Frequently asked questions

Is data annotation the same as data labelling?

Yes — the two terms are used interchangeably.

Do I need technical skills to do data annotation?

Not for most general tasks. Careful reading, consistency and good language skills matter more. Expert and coding projects do require specialist knowledge.

Will AI replace data annotators?

Some labelling is increasingly automated, but human judgement is still used to create, check and evaluate training data, especially for complex tasks.
